Q&A with The Golden Eagle

To celebrate the launch of ‘The Elm Leaf’ installation in Marylebone Village, we are celebrating the rich history of the area and the retailers who make the vibrant village come to life. We caught up with pub owners Gina and Jack to find out their best moment over the years.

You’ve been in business for over 35 years. What does the Marylebone Village pub mean to you?

The Golden Eagle is a very special place, where we have made many great friends over the years and continue to meet new faces each day. In the hustle and bustle of London, where it can sometimes get very lonely, it's important that everybody knows they have a friendly local to come to have fun and make some new memories with.

How has Marylebone Village changed in the time that you have been there?

There have certainly been many changes, with new shops and restaurants joining us each year, but I am pleased to say that it still feels very much like a community.

Why should everyone visit your Marylebone Village pub?

In this modern world sometimes, it is nice to be reminded of a simpler time! We are a traditional, family run pub that serves the best ales in town and offers you a good old-fashioned sing-a-long with friends around the piano. There was a time when almost every pub in London would have a piano but that seems to be a rarity nowadays.

What’s your proudest achievement to date?

There have been many great moments, but I must say coming second in the London Pub of the Year Awards was something that sticks out! We know there are so many fantastic options in London and feel honoured that our pub got a mention.

The Elm tree in Marylebone Village has stood in the same place for decades and has survived many challenges. Do you have an item/object that has stood the test of time in your life?

The Golden Eagle itself is actually over 200 years old, getting its public licence in the 1800s - we're very proud that we are able to continue this legacy and serve the community!

What can we expect from The Golden Eagle in the next year?

We always love to try fresh and new ales, from both local breweries and a far, so we are looking forward to some new flavours over the summer months. And of course, plenty more singalong evenings for everyone to enjoy!

What is your favourite memory of The Golden Eagle?

There have been so many memories over the 30+ years from famous faces, to featuring on BBC London! But one of my personal favourites was back in the 90s. We had a new hire that also happened to be a trained opera singer! One evening when Tony had pulled out the Piano and began playing some songs, totally out of the blue our very own barman burst into song! He had a beautiful voice and was so loud that it travelled all the way down Marylebone Lane. It was the first time we had heard him sing and everybody just stopped what they were doing and listened in disbelief. It was like our very own opera house for the night!
